How to determine a cylinder head malfunction?

In modern industry, the cylinder head is a key component of the engine, and its normal operation is crucial for the overall performance of mechanical equipment. However, due to various internal and external factors, cylinder heads may experience various malfunctions. This article will explore how to identify common faults in cylinder heads, in order to help operators discover and solve problems in a timely manner, and ensure production safety.

1, Loose cylinder head bolts

The cylinder head bolt is an important component that fixes the cylinder head. Once the bolt is loose, it may cause deformation of the cylinder head, sinking of the cylinder barrel, and other faults, thereby affecting the performance of the engine. The method to determine whether the bolt is loose is as follows:

Observation method: Check the tightness of the cylinder head bolts and observe for any looseness. At the same time, check whether the contact surface between the cylinder head and cylinder block is flat, and whether there are any warping, dents, or other phenomena.

Hand feel method: Shake the cylinder head bolts up and down with both hands to feel if they are loose. If there is obvious shaking, it should be tightened in a timely manner.

Instrument detection: Use a cylinder pressure gauge to detect cylinder pressure. Under normal circumstances, the pressure of each cylinder should be close to and reach the standard value. If an abnormally low pressure is found in a certain cylinder, it may be due to loose bolts in the cylinder causing the cylinder head to sink.

2, Cylinder gasket erosion

The cylinder gasket is a sealing element between the cylinder head and cylinder block. Once burned, it can cause air and water leakage in the engine, and in severe cases, even prevent the engine from starting. The method to determine whether the cylinder gasket is burned is as follows:

Observation method: Check whether the sealing rubber ring of the cylinder gasket is intact and whether there are any signs of burning, aging, etc. At the same time, check whether the flatness of the joint surface between the cylinder block and the cylinder head meets the requirements.

Hand feel method: Shake the cylinder head up and down with both hands to feel if there is any abnormal looseness. If there is obvious looseness, it may be caused by the burning of the cylinder gasket.

Instrument detection: Use a cylinder pressure gauge to detect the pressure of each cylinder. If an abnormally low or zero pressure is found in a certain cylinder, it may be due to the burning of the cylinder gasket of that cylinder.

3, Cracks in cylinder head

The cylinder head is prone to cracking in high-temperature and high-pressure working environments, which can lead to engine performance degradation, air and water leakage, and other problems. The method to determine whether there are cracks in the cylinder head is as follows:

Visual inspection method: Carefully observe the surface and corners of the cylinder head, especially in areas where cracks often appear, such as fuel injector holes, water channel openings, etc. If cracks are found, the cylinder head should be replaced in a timely manner.

Tapping method: Gently tap various parts of the cylinder head with a small hammer. If you hear a crisp metal sound or abnormal vibration, it may be due to cracks in that area. Further inspection and confirmation should be conducted at this time.

Non destructive testing method: For cylinder heads that are difficult to determine through visual inspection and tapping, non-destructive testing techniques such as ultrasonic testing, fluorescence leak detection, etc. can be used. These methods can accurately detect small cracks and holes.
