Mass air flow sensors are available in a variety of sensor types and designs. Hot-film or hot-wire sensors are the most popular, and it is possible to include extra characteristics for example silicon layers or membranes 2 to create true mass flow readings that are able to cope with turbulent conditions and backflow.
Robust Measurements
A flowmeter could possibly be considered as an alternative to a mass air flow sensor in particular environments. Although, given the volume dependence on temperature and the compressibility of gases, flow meter readings are highly sensitive to changes in environmental conditions.
Low Cost
In mass air flow sensors, the lack of moving parts makes them more dependable and simpler to maintain and, for thermal mass air flow sensors especiallyespecially ,makes them relatively low cost. MEMS-based sensors commonly have very low draws of power, which decreases the related costs of running the sensor.
Vane Air Flow Meters are an older airflow sensor type. They are further classified into VAF Signal Voltage and Karman Vortex Air Flow Sensors. The latter is newer in design. It uses a moveable mirror and a phototransistor to measure airflow.
Hot Wire Air Flow MAF sensors are advanced MAF sensors and are more common. They consist of a thermistor, a platinum hot wire, and an electronic control circuit. The thermistor is a temperature sensor that measures the air temperature. An electronic control circuit keeps a platinum hot wire at a constant temperature. When the air comes into contact with the heated wire, it cools down. When the temperature difference between the two wires changes, the MAF sensor automatically raises or lowers the current to the hot wire.
There are also Cold Wire Air Flow sensors that work similarly to their hot wire counterparts. However, they have an extra cold resistor that lets them measure the ambient air.
Modern mass air flow sensors use either a hot wire(s) or hot film element. The sensor's internal circuitry heats up the element to a specific temperature. As air flows past the element and cools it off, the sensor increases the current to the element to maintain the specified temperature.
There is a direct correlation to the amount of current needed to maintain the element's temperature to the MASS of airflow past it.
It's important to note that the sensor's element is only a sample of a small part of the airstream. If the intake system has been modified or changed due to a failure, the element may not receive an adequate sample of incoming airstream, which may cause a measurement error to occur
If air enters the engine without passing through the sensor (for example, the air boot between the intake and the mass air flow sensor isn't installed properly, or a vacuum leak is present), the true airflow mass entering the engine will not be known.
