Types of Axle Shafts
Semi-Floating Axle Shafts
This design has flange faces on both outer ends of the axle shaft. These faces attach directly onto the associated wheels.
Fully Floating Axle Shafts
Instead of having flange faces that directly connect the axle shaft to the wheels, this style of axle shaft has hubs between the two components. Each wheel connects to a hub, and that hub rotates on roller bearings attached to a spindle at both ends of the axle shaft. The roller bearings are tapered and face opposing directions, and the hubs and bearings handle the vehicle weight to take strain off the axle bearing.
Three-Quarter Floating Axle Shafts
These axle shafts feature elements from both semi-floating and fully floating axle shaft designs. Three-quarter floating axle shafts have bearings positioned between the axle casing and hub axle shaft. However, the bearings remain protected from shearing or bending forces.

Transmit Engine Torque
A key purpose of the axle is to transmit rotation and torque from an automobile's engine and transmission to the wheels to propel the vehicle. Without the axle transferring the rotational energy into the tyre motion, the car could not drive along the road. Axles efficiently convert the high torque the engine generates into usable traction at the wheels.
Alloy Wheel Speed Differences
Axles also enable the wheels on either side of the car to spin at slightly different speeds, thanks to the differential. This is crucial when cornering, where the outer wheel must rotate faster to travel further around the bend than the inner wheel. The differential allows this relative motion, improving stability, grip and steering response. Tyres would skid and scrape on turns without different left and right wheel speeds.
Bear Vehicle Weight
Modern axles support thousands of pounds - from the vehicle body, chassis, and any cargo and passengers inside. Suspension components like springs, shock absorbers and sway bars mount to the axle housing across the car before reaching upwards to the frame. Quality axle design ensures durability to withstand these heavy static and dynamic weight loads over years of driving.
Absorb Driveline Stresses
Axles must persevere under torque stresses, too. Whether accelerating hard from a stoplight or slowing aggressively when braking, the axle deals with immense twisting forces. Axle shafts flinch slightly to handle this torque, with support bearings controlling the movement. Correct flexing prevents damage to gears and other driveline parts under load.
House Bearings and Seals
Integrated into the axle assembly are large, sturdy bearings and protective seals that keep dirt and water out. Rigid roller bearings allow smooth, low-friction spinning of the wheel hubs, axle shafts and differential gears. Meanwhile, seals stop grit from entering the bearings and retain vital lubricant inside - both critical to prolonging axle life.
Provide Brake and Wheel Mounts
Additionally, axles supply appropriate anchoring points for attaching the wheel hubs and brake assembly components like discs or drums. Secure mounts enable safe wheel installation, allowing effortless removal for tyre changes and brake service. Reliable attachment between the wheels, hubs, and axles is essential when transmitting driveline forces.
Materials and Manufacturing Methods
Original equipment axle shafts are typically made from high-grade steel, generally SAE 1039, 1055, 1050, or 1541. They are forged and then heat treated with induction coils. The induction heat-treating process quickly draws the shaft through an electromagnetic coil. As a consequence it is heated and quenched in a controlled fashion to harden the surface of the shaft while the center core remains relatively soft, maintaining its ductility. Original equipment axle shaft hardness depth is typically between 0.100 and 0.180 inch. The shafts are not usually hardened all the way through in order to maintain the ductility and toughness of the softer core.
Surface hardening provides sufficient wear resistance for bearing surfaces and seal journals for long life. As a shaft becomes harder, it typically becomes more brittle and less resistant to shock loads. This is one reason it is important to have the correct axle shaft for your application. In some applications, you may want a through-hardened shaft. In typical street-use applications, you want to have ductile shafts. Purpose-built drag cars require through-hardened shafts and special gear sets.
As the horsepower of the vehicle increases and subsequent wheel torque is generated, stronger materials like SAE 1550 or 4340, or even a more exotic 300M, are needed for extreme-duty axle shafts. The SAE 4300 series material is referred to as a high-strength low-alloy material. Strengthening materials like chromium and molybdenum are added to the steel to create chromoly (also called cromo, or CRMO) alloy grades.
