Types of Intake Manifolds
Single Plane Manifold
A single-plane manifold features a large, open plenum that feeds all the engine's cylinders from a single chamber. This design provides a direct and unobstructed airflow path, which makes it particularly effective for high-RPM performance. While it can produce impressive horsepower numbers at the top end of the RPM range, it often sacrifices low-end torque, making it more suitable for drag racing or other applications where high RPM power is the priority.
Dual Plane Manifold
A dual-plane manifold is essentially split into two separate plenums, each serving half of the engine's cylinders. This configuration helps maintain strong airflow at lower engine speeds, translating into better low-end torque and quicker throttle response. At the same time, it still supports respectable power gains in the mid to upper RPM range. Thanks to this balance of low-end grunt and top-end capabilities, dual-plane manifolds are a popular choice for street-driven vehicles and mild performance builds.

Components of Intake Manifold
Intake Manifold Plenum
The plenum is the large cavity at the top of the manifold. It acts as a reservoir, holding the air until it's ready to go into the cylinders. The plenum evenly distributes the air to the runners before it passes through the intake valve.
The size of the plenum impacts the engine's performance. Aftermarket manifolds can have a split plenum that can be separated into two. This design makes it easier to clean the inside of the manifold.
Intake Manifold Runners
The runners are tubes that carry air from the plenum to the intake port on each cylinder head. For fuel-injected engines, there are ports for the fuel injectors in each runner. Fuel is injected just before the air goes into the intake port.
The size of the runners is a critical factor when it comes to engine performance. The width and the length of the runners largely determine where the peak horsepower of the engine is.
Should you need to replace the entire intake manifold, consult your vehicle's service manual for model-specific instructions. Generally, this involves:
Disconnecting hoses, sensors, and wiring connected to the manifold.
Removing bolts or fasteners in the proper sequence to avoid warping.
Inspecting the mating surfaces, cleaning off old gasket debris, and installing a new gasket or seal.
Re-torquing bolts to the manufacturer's specifications, ensuring an even, leak-free seal.
