Toyota 48210-0K530 Rear Leaf Spring

Leaf Spring - Overview

A leaf spring is a type of vehicle suspension spring, typically made of flat, curved strips of steel (leaves) stacked together. It acts as a flexible component that absorbs shocks and vibrations from uneven road surfaces, supporting the vehicle's weight and maintaining wheel contact. Leaf springs are often found in the rear suspension of trucks and older vehicles.

Advantages of Leaf Spring

01/

Weight and Back Load Capacity
A leaf spring suspension system excels at bearing heavy-duty loads on the vehicle's rear. While coil springs can also handle these loads, other factors make leaf springs the more economical choice without sacrificing performance and durability.

02/

Simplicity
Leaf springs are simple and direct systems. They directly support the spring assembly's axle. They don't need the complex arrangements required by coil springs or other types of suspension.

03/

Weight and Space Saving
Thanks to its simpler construction and relatively few parts, the leaf spring is lighter and occupies less space than other suspension systems. It can fit in cramped areas and doesn't add excessive weight to the vehicle.

04/

Lower Cost
Leaf spring suspensions are more affordable to acquire, repair, and maintain in good condition. Their simplicity keeps their production cost low, so you spend less on new and replacement parts. It's also easier to check a leaf spring suspension for issues, identify the faulty part, and replace it.

Material of Leaf Spring

Leaf springs are most commonly made from high-strength steel alloys:

SUP9 and SUP11A Steel

SUP9 and SUP11A are two grades of spring steel that are widely used in the automotive industry, especially in Asia. They are equivalent to the SAE grades 5155 and 5160, respectively. These steels have a medium carbon content (0.52-0.60% for SUP9 and 0.56-0.64% for SUP11A) and a high manganese content (0.65-0.95% for both grades), which enhance their hardenability and strength. They also contain chromium (0.65-0.95% for SUP9 and 0.70-0.90% for SUP11A), which improves their corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

5160 steel

5160 steel is one of the most popular types of steel used for leaf springs in North America. It is a high-carbon steel (0.56-0.64% carbon) with a low alloy content (0.75-1.00% manganese, 0.70-0.90% chromium, and up to 0.15% vanadium). It has excellent toughness, ductility, and fatigue resistance, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications. It also has good corrosion resistance and wear resistance, thanks to the chromium content.

9260 steel

9260 steel is another type of steel used for leaf springs, especially in Europe. It is a high-carbon steel (0.56-0.64% carbon) with a high alloy content (1.80-2.20% silicon, 0.80-1.10% chromium, and up to 0.15% vanadium). It has superior toughness, strength, and fatigue resistance, making it suitable for extreme conditions. It also has good corrosion resistance and wear resistance, thanks to the silicon and chromium content.

Composite Materials

Composite materials are not steel, but they are also used for modern leaf springs. Composite materials are made of two or more different materials that are combined to create a new material with improved properties. For example, fiberglass, carbon fiber, and epoxy resin are common composite materials used for leaf springs. These materials have high strength, stiffness, and fatigue resistance, but low weight and density, making them ideal for reducing the vehicle weight and improving the fuel efficiency. They also have good corrosion resistance and wear resistance, making them durable and long-lasting.

Application of Leaf Spring
Automotive Sector:
They enhance ride comfort and handling in cars and trucks by providing strength and flexibility in suspension systems.
Commercial Vehicles:
In buses and heavy-duty trucks, multi-leaf springs support heavy loads and absorb shocks, essential for long-haul transportation.
Agricultural Machinery:
Utilized in tractors and harvesters, they allow smoother operations on uneven terrain, reducing wear and tear.

FAQ

Q: What are leaf springs used for?

A: Leaf springs are primarily used in vehicle suspension systems to support the weight of the vehicle and its cargo, while also absorbing impacts from uneven road surfaces. They act as a flexible link between the vehicle's chassis and the wheels, allowing for vertical movement and cushioning the ride.

Q: What is the most commonly used leaf spring?

A: The most common and trusted leaf spring shape is the semi-elliptical, although additional strain can be taken by a full elliptical leaf spring when needed.

Q: What is the lifespan of a leaf spring?

A: In utility vehicles, leaf springs are hardy components designed to withstand heavier loads and rougher terrains compared to their counterparts in standard cars. Their durability often grants them a lifespan ranging between 10 to 20 years, depending on maintenance and usage.

Q: What grade of steel are leaf springs made of?

A: Alloy Steel 5160, also sold as AISI 5160, is a high carbon and chromium spring steel. It offers users outstanding toughness, a high level of ductility, and excellent fatigue resistance. Alloy Steel 5160 is in use in the automotive field in a number of different heavy spring applications, especially for leaf springs.

Q: Do leaf springs go bad with age?

A: The lifespan of leaf springs can vary depending on factors like usage, maintenance, driving conditions, and quality of the springs, but they typically last at least 50,000 to 100,000 miles with many going the vehicle's lifetime.

Q: Are you manufacturer or trading company?

A: We are manufacturer.

Q: What's your best delivery time?

A: Within 15-30 days.

Q: What is the quality control of your product?

A: Follow strictly quality control measures for implementation,

Q: Will your company provide free sample?

A: It depends on which sort of item you want to get. Some can be provided free of charge, however, the client shall assume the shipping fees himself.
